Our crowning glory, the hair is made up of two parts, the hair root and the hair shaft.
The hair root is the origin point of the hair, which comes out of a hair bulb embedded in the hair follicles present on the scalp.
The hair shaft is the visible part/body of the hair. It is a thin strand which constitutes of three parts, a cuticle, cortex and medulla.
- The cuticle is the protective outermost layer of the hair and to an extent, the quality, texture, elasticity and shine of hair is affected by the type of cuticle it has. The cuticle is arranged like roof tiles on a hair strand and the way they are placed affects the overall hair quality.
- The cortex of the hair is its thickest part and takes up nearly 90 percent of the diameter and it controls aspects like the color of hair.
- The medulla is the center portion of hair, it is thicker in the case of thick hair and may be absent altogether if the hair strand is very fine.
